On your marks, get set, go! It's not yet the final spurt, but the 4th term runs on full speeds, even though it's only the first week. New teachers new books, new group assignments. We also have to select our majors and minors for the last academic year. The best would be to get my tarot cards out of the box so that they forecast the future and the best decision.
Slowly spring knocks at the door. Snow is melting. The sky is blue and for the first time in my life I saw a rainbow-coloured cloud. If you can't imagine what that is, you should come to Switzerland and keep your eyes peeled.

Insight of the week: I have never seen as much military as here in neutral Switzerland, I guess that's because the casern is right next to my university.

Tourist Typologies

Leptosom | Leptosome
Athletiker | Athletic
Pykniker | Pyknic

Actually exams are already over, but I am still wondering about Ernst Kretschmer and his trifold typology. What's up with the Pyknic, Leptosome and Athletic? How would they look like as tourists? Where would they travel to?

It is obvious that the Athletic is strong and muscular, he has broad shoulders and is well tanned. Not to forget his pronounced six-pack. Of  course, he prefers active and adventurous holiday destinations, that is why he can be found surfing on Hawaii or Portugal and hiking in the Himalayas. Yes, he is an adventure addict and always carries his sport equipment with him.

Totally different is the Leptosome, who is skinny, thin and chicken-breasted. It is the typical pale tourist. A rather sensible and weak type, thus he won't travel too far from home, maybe Italy, France or Spain for an European. Nothing thrilling, furthermore, he needs enough information to plan his trip, he doesn't want to undergo an unpleasant surprise. That's also the reason why he always has a map at hand and of course a camera to capture the most beautiful moments for eternity. He can be recognised easily, as he wears socks in his sandals and always applies a thick coat of sunscreen.

The Pyknic is a more placid holidaymaker. He has a tendency to corpulency and has a compact build. His neck is almost not distinguishable. More often  than not he is sunburned. Not like the Leptosome, he is sociable, kindhearted and cheerful. But he can get hot tempered very quickly. So, where can we find him? Of course, everywhere one can relax, like in Phuket, El Arenal on Majorca, Turkey and also Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

For sure, now you want to know which type I am. Considering my weight, I would be a Leptosome. But  then I can't really figure out, what I was doing in the Himalayas. And you, have you found your type? Because if you go on a holiday next time, better think about what the destination tells about you. But don't worry, there are also mixed-types.

By the way, one can also compare it to the three fundamental bodily humours of Dosha according to Ayurveda.

Now you have one hour to answer these 20 questions. Good luck! Well, I don't know what that has to do with luck if I have only 3 minutes to answer each question. That has more to do with speed, so there is actually no luck needed but a well writing pen and a fast hand. Before the next exams I'm not going to study the learning matter but a fast tidy writing. Definitely. Mostly they give points per minutes, so, if a question gives 8 points, it shouldn't take more than 8 minutes to answer this question. But the question is, when in this 8 minutes do I think and when do I write the answer. As the answer needs to be half a page long, it would be convenient to think before the exam and then only write down the answer during the exam. I'm not too sure, whether this is possible, I mean to think about a possible answer before the exam has even started.
The most funny thing are the movable walls between each student, so that nobody can copy from or talk to the neighbour. The silly thing about it is, that even the teacher can't see one anymore and that gives an awesome possibility to cheat, assuming that one needs to.
Well, at least the exam time is over faster than in Spain. Over here there are two exams every day, so in one week it gets over very quickly. Exactly, in the end everything is just quick, quick and wishy-washy.

Insight of the week: In the end it is good to know, that later in life there will be only one group of persons who will ask me the same questions I get asked nowadays at university, and these persons are going to be my children.

9 days, 5 modulexams, 2 oral presentations, 2 language exams. 5 days per module for preparation plus 4 days for repeating, language exams and oral presentations will be prepared at the evenings. Good plan, perfectly gone wrong. After the 6th day my head was already exploding because of all the knowledge. Well, that's it, weekend is weekend, that's time to laze around, to draw and to read.
All in all, after these 9 days I have to admit that 9 days of learning can be very boring, one sees nobody, stays inside all time and virtually doesn't leave the flat and beeing seated all time leaves black and blue marks on the bum.

Insight of the week: One week of learning is very exhausting.

Gelandet

Am I on vacation now, or just at home? Anyway, the airplane from Switzerland landed 15 minutes early on Majorca, that must be because of the Swiss punctuality. Nevertheless, because of the Majorcan non-existent coordination, one has to walk half an hour through the airport to reach the baggage claim. And of course, the counter to declare goods was closed, so the sausages entered just as simple as that into the country. Well, it was almost holiday, obviously the tollkeeper prefered to talk to the nice air hostess.
Well then, a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Insight of the week: Only because there is snow in Switzerland doesn't mean that one has to carry one's winter jacket to Majorca.

Durchgeweicht

Dorfkirche Tamins | village church, Tamins

Oh well, I chose the best day for Christmas shopping. Rain, rain, rain.Fortunately I wasn't alone. Tanja and Mélanie struggled with me through the rain. Well, actually that's a lie. It didn't rain inside Manor. I didn't even know that this department store has so many floors, until now I had only explored to the first floor. There was enough for me to look at... I got totally swamped. And all the things we bought over there. But I wont tell what. Otherwise somebody might just get to know what he/she will get for Christmas. We ended the day with a delicious Confiserie et Pâtisserie, and if not delicious, at least pretty to look at.

Saturday was a snowy day. Finally. Or sadly? Anyway, I went for a snow-walk. At least after I found a track. And eventually I found myself in Conn. I don't remember how I got there, but when I was back home I realised that my presents I bought before in Flims got soaked by the snow.

Insight of the week: Swiss know their hiking trails by heart and find them even though they can't be seen. Disappeared in deep snow.

Ecological Footprint: Save the world, become a vegan hermit

Was tun?

Last week at uni we talked about the ecological footprint. This is the footprint you leave with your consumption, eating habits, mobility and much more on the Earth. The ecological footprint for the whole world lies by 1,4 planet Earth, for Switzerland it lies by 2,4. In other words, we use the Earth 2,4 times as fast as it can renew itself. So, what to do? How to consume in order to use just one planet Earth?
I have gone through this scenario on the WWF footprint calculator and sadly I have to admit this it is not possible. I only could reduce consumption to 1,2 planet Earth. But what exactly do we have to do for that?
One important role plays the eating habit. So, please, no meat, no fish, nor any milk products or eggs. It's just cool to say: "I am vegan because of sustainability." Oh, and before I forget, if you have fruits or vegetables, then please only seasonal, biological, fresh and not packed in plastic and out of your region. So, no oranges for Christmas unless you live in Spain.
Furthermore, there definitely has to be made an reduction in relation to consumption, news have to be read online, books have to be borrowed from the library and electrical devices have to be bought very, very seldom. Maybe once a month you can buy an new t-shirt or a pair of socks. And of course, you have to invest your money in a sustainable way. Or do you know what kind of projects are financed with your money at your bank?
Now you may ask yourself, and what's with mobility? Going by bike is all right. But don't go by car, train or bus and don't even think about going by airplane. The best will be to live right at your working place, because mobility looks everything else but bright in a sustainable world.
But that's still not all. Because if you really want to be sustainable, then you have to build a new house first. The only possibility will be a Swiss Minergie passive house made out of wood, during winter you need to heat either with geothermal energy or with solar energy. Also hot water should be heated by solar energy only and you should keep room temperature at 19 degree Celsius. And of course, only use energy-saving lamps, otherwise it will make no sense.
If you manage to do all this, then you can almost say proudly that you are sustainable. Well, but only almost, remeber that you are still consuming 0,2 planet Earth too much.
The only question in the end is, whether the requirements above are economically sustainable...

Insight of the week: I am consuming 1,2 planet Earth too much. Should I become a vegan?

P.S. I am not sure wether I should believe WWF or not, as I made out some inconsistencies in their footprint calculator. The very fact that it's not possible to reduce consumption down to one Earth talks for itself.
